Terrible news for Macron: the figure of 68,000 deaths from Covid-19 in France has been inflated, according to a study
A new study that risks embarrassing the Executive. In France, at a time when the Executive is fighting to face the exponential increase in cases throughout the national territory, in particular in the Paris region, a study made public on March 17 and consulted by Lecourrier-du-soir. com risks sowing a heated controversy.
Indeed, according to the study conducted by two researchers, Gilles Pison and France Meslé, from the National Institute of Demographic Studies (INED), the death figures attributed to Covid-19 include cases of people who died of other pathologies. The study thus concludes that of the 68,000 deaths, only 42,000 are actually attributable to the Coronavirus .
Relaying this information, the Sud Ouest media will say: “some 68,000 people died from Covid-19 in France last year, but the total number of deaths has increased 'only' by 55,000, because part of the deaths from the Covid 'would have died of another cause anyway, and that the flu and the road accidents were less deadly ”.
According to the study read by Lecourrier-du-soir.com , of the 55,000 deaths, 13,000 must be deducted which are due to the aging of the population. The study continues: “therefore remain the 42,000 additional in 2020, linked to the Covid-19 pandemic”.
The study adds: "How to explain that this figure of 68,000 deaths due to Covid-19 greatly exceeds the 42,000 additional deaths recorded by INSEE compared to 2019 from all causes of death combined once the 13,000 deaths due are deducted? to the aging of the population? This is due to the decline in other causes of death.
The seasonal flu epidemic of winter 2019-2020 did not cause significant excess mortality at the start of 2020, unlike that of the previous winter (2018-2019), which had ended in an increase of 12,000 deaths, concentrated in early 2019, including around 8,000 directly attributed to influenza [5]. Another notable decline: road fatalities were lower in 2020, due to traffic restrictions ”.
In the study, the two researchers implicitly defend the idea that people who died from other diseases were counted on the list of deaths from Covid-19. With that, they will say: “But another phenomenon has also played a role: comorbidity. Deaths from Covid-19 have partly struck fragile people suffering from other illnesses. A fraction of them would have died in 2020 anyway, even in the absence of the Covid-19 epidemic. Their death would then have been attributed to another cause (diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory failure, etc.) ”.
On social networks, the study did not fail to arouse strong reactions from Internet users.
