India And Russia Block Controversial Climate Change Agenda At UNSC

On Monday, India alongside the veto-yielding Russia effectively blocked a controversial proposal which would allow UN Security Council to consult on issues regarding climate change.

TS Tirumurti, India’s permanent representative to the United Nations, said his country intends to always defend the interests of developing countries and has no choice but to veto the efforts made so as to “securitise” climate change, reported Indian Express.

“India is second to none when it comes to climate action and climate justice. But UNSC is not the place to discuss either issue. In fact, an attempt to do so appears to be motivated by a desire to evade responsibility in the appropriate forum and divert the world’s attention from an unwillingness to deliver where it counts,” Tirumurti said.

He added that there should and always be no doubt about India’s commitment to fighting climate change, further going on to say that they intend to always “support real climate action and serious climate justice.”

Tirumurti also urged developed countries to provide a $1 trillion corpus as soon as possible, stressing that climate finance ought to be monitored with the same level of urgency as climate mitigation. “The developed countries have fallen well short of their promises,” he added.

India’s protest against armament of climate change has found common ground with Russia, which is concerned that the Council is using its power to take coercive action to address the challenges of global warming.

Vassily Nebenezia, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said Moscow would not be willing to support the resolution because it had intentions to formulate two different genres into one. Nebenezia also stressed that the climate has nothing to do with global security.

“Billing climate change as a threat to international security diverts the council’s attention from genuine, deep-rooted reasons of conflict in the countries on the Council’s agenda,” Nebenezia stated.

The Russian envoy went onto add that securitising climate change would only serve to be convenient for countries that are involved in actively aiding to bring about conflicts or waged military activities away from the eyes of the Security Council’s mandate or quite simply are not willing to give the necessary aid to the still developing countries.

“It is particularly sad to see this attempt to shove in this draft resolution when there’s a clear lack of consensus among the members of the Security Council now when countries are trying to agree on how to implement the Paris Agreement in Glasgow, and also on measures that really are necessary to fight climate change,” Nebenzia concluded.

COP26 has been sold as a conference where world leaders will finally tackle climate change. But for its corporate sponsors, the conference is an opportunity to greenwash their practices of polluting for profit.

The most powerful private financial interests in the world, under the cover of COP26, have developed a plan to transform the global financial system by fusing with institutions like the World Bank and using them to further erode national sovereignty in the developing world.

Meanwhile, Sweden has blocked Bill Gates’ geoengineering experiment to block the Sun with aerosols to reverse global warming.
