One US citizen among dead in West Bank attack

A US citizen was among those killed Thursday in the West Bank, the State Department said, after Israeli police reported an attack outside a Jewish settlement.

"We extend our condolences to his family and friends," a spokesman said. "Out of respect for the privacy of the family, we have no further details to share."

Israeli police told AFP that at least one attacker had opened fire from a car near a settlement south of Jerusalem before crashing into pedestrians.

Three people were killed in the incident, including a suspected attacker. A number of others were wounded.

One of the victims was identified as an Israeli from the Alon Shvut settlement near the site of the attack, and another was the American, police said.

The incident appeared to be the latest in a recent string of attacks by Palestinians protesting the Israeli occupation and settlement of West Bank land.

Earlier in the day, a 36-year-old Palestinian stormed an office building in Israel's commercial capital Tel Aviv with a knife, killing two Israelis and wounding one.
