Shinzo Abe, 67, a former Japanese prime minister, was assassinated on Friday (July 8) while giving a campaign speech in western Japan.

For political leaders, the stakes can be very high, as Statista’s Anna Fleck explains below. A number of political figures have been killed in the previous twenty years, either while they were still in government or after leaving it. The presidents and prime ministers who have passed away since 2000 are shown in the graphic below, according to AP.

The chart then depicts a ten year gap during which neither a president nor a prime minister was assassinated. However, prominent figures at the time, like Mohammed Brahmi and the leader of Tunisia’s left-wing opposition, Chokri Belaid, died.
At a political gathering in the city of Rawalpindi, Benazir Bhutto, the first female on the list and Pakistan’s first female prime minister, was shot and later injured by a suicide bomber’s blast.
2011 saw the capture and assassination of Libya’s dictator Moammar Gaddafi, whose regime had been ousted by a rebellion backed by NATO.
Both Presidents Kabila of the Congo and Joo Bernardo Vieira of Guinea-Bissau were assassinated by insiders—the first by a child soldier who had grown into his bodyguard and the second by a soldier in his presidential complex.
While this was going on, the Monarch of Nepal was assassinated by his own son, who supposedly got into a fight about the marriage of the prince and murdered nine family members, including the king, in the palace.
