Gold Nanoparticles Could Treat Heart Disease Says Scientists

A process which has been described as significantly less complicated than using other regeneration ways involves the usage of gold nanoparticles. Scientists even claim that these gold nanoparticles could be used to treat heart diseases.

New research headed by associate professors Dr. Emilio Alarcon and Dr. Erik Suuronen of the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine reveals that tailored gold nanoparticles could be used to treat heart problems.

The scientists investigated a treatment that included sprinkling gold nanoparticles altered with peptides on the hearts of lab mice, as per a media release on the university’s website.

The researchers noted that their treatment improved both cardiac activity and heart electrical conductivity, and also that the gold particles they utilized had no evidence of “off-target organ infiltration.”

“That’s the beauty of this approach. You spray, then you wait a couple of weeks, and the animals are doing just fine compared to the controls,” said Dr. Alarcon.

He further said that using this strategy is significantly less complicated than using other regeneration ways to help treat an infarcted heart.

According to the press release, the group is currently working to modify this innovation to “minimally invasive procedures that will expedite testing in large animal models, such as rabbits and pigs.”

Scientists from the University of Talca in Chile were also engaged in the research, which was partially supported by the Canadian government’s New Frontiers in Research Fund.
