Spike Ferritin Nanoparticle COVID Vaccine – US Army’s Single Vaccine Against All COVID-19 & SARS Variants
The US Army has created a single vaccine that they claim work against all COVID-19 and SARS variants. Spike Ferritin Nanoparticle COVID-19 vaccine, alternatively named SpFN makes use of a protein in the shape of a soccer ball which has 24 faces for its vaccine, which gives scientists the ability to attach the spikes of multiple COVID variants on separate faces of the protein.
Scientists at the Army’s Walter Reed Research Institute expect to announce the development of this effective vaccine against COVID-19 and all of its variants, including the Omicron strain, and all the SARS-origin viruses.
This accomplishment is the culmination of nearly two years of work on the virus. The military laboratory acquired the first DNA sequencing of the COVID-19 virus early on in 2020.
Walter Reed’s Infectious Diseases Department decided early on to concentrate on developing a vaccine that would work not just against the existing strain, but against all possible strains.
Walter Reed’s Spike Ferritin Nanoparticle COVID-19 vaccine, alternatively named SpFN, passed the animal trials phase early this year with results that appeared to be positive.
In an interview with the media on Tuesday, Dr. Kayvon Modjarrad, director of infectious diseases branch at Walter Reed, said the first phase of human testing, which ended this month, was again showing positive results and was set to undergo a final review. The second and third phase of trials for the vaccine are yet to commence.
“We’re testing our vaccine against all the different variants, including Omicron,” Modjarrad said.
Some Walter Reed officials said in a statement on Wednesday that their vaccine “was not tested on the Omicron variant,” but then emailed the media clarifying that despite the latest strain of the virus not being a part of the animal trials, they were testing it in the lab versus the samples from clinical human trials. These “neutralization assays” determine whether the vaccine can affect the development of the virus.
“We want to wait for those clinical data to be able to kind of make the full public announcements, but so far everything has been moving along exactly as we had hoped,” said Modjarrad.
Unlike the currently prevalent vaccines, SpFN by Walter Reed makes use of a protein in the shape of a soccer ball which has 24 faces for its vaccine, which gives scientists the ability to attach the spikes of multiple COVID variants on separate faces of the protein.
“It’s very exciting to get to this point for our entire team and I think for the entire Army as well,” stated Modjarrad.
He said the vaccine test in humans took longer than expected because the lab had to test the vaccine on people who were not vaccinated or who had not been previously infected with the COVID virus.
The increased immunization rates and rapid escalation of the Delta and Omicron variants have made this difficult.
“With Omicron, there’s no way really to escape this virus. You’re not going to be able to avoid it. So I think pretty soon either the whole world will be vaccinated or have been infected,” Modjarrad said.
The next step in the process would be to examine how the latest pan-coronavirus vaccine interacts with people who have been vaccinated in the past or who have been sick from the virus before.
Walter Reed is working for this broader rollout with an anonymous industry partner.
“We need to evaluate it in the real-world setting and try to understand how does the vaccine perform in much larger numbers of individuals who have already been vaccinated with something else initially…or already been sick,” Modjarrad said.
Nearly 2,500 Walter Reed employees have been involved in the production of the vaccine that lasted almost two years, he said.
“We decided to take a look at the long game rather than just only focusing on the original emergence of SARS, and instead understand that viruses mutate, there will be variants that emerge, future viruses that may emerge in terms of new species. Our platform and approach will equip people to be prepared for that.”
According to a major Swedish study, spike protein induced by COVID vaccines weakens the immune system and may also lead to cancer. The study found that the spike protein localizes in the nucleus and inhibits DNA damage repair.
