A twist: Italy revolts against the European Union and refuses to reduce its gas consumption by 15%

After Spain, Greece and Portugal, Italy categorically refuses to obey the European Union which asks member states to reduce their gas consumption by 15%

The sling wins the European Union. Less than a week after the announcement of the EU's decision to cut gas consumption by 15%, several southern European countries have openly expressed their disagreement. Until now, the refractories were Spain, Portugal and Greece. They have just been joined by Italy.

Indeed, according to the Italian press agency Ansa.it , which cites diplomatic sources, the Italian government has also firmly opposed the idea of ??reducing its gas consumption by 15%. According to the same source, Rome opposes the 15% set by the EU, the binding nature of the decision and its generalization to all members.

It should be remembered that Spain also categorically rejected this decision, believing that it would have drastic consequences for its economy. “I am very sorry to have to say that Spain does not support this proposal. We consider that it arises without a prior debate, without a general orientation debate at the Council of Europe, especially when the economic consequences are particularly important”, has also indicated Teresa Ribera, Spanish Minister for Energy. .

Regarding Portugal, our media has learned from the Portuguese news site,  Observador.pt , that the Portuguese government has totally rejected this proposal. According to this media, the Portuguese Minister of the Environment, Duarte Cordeiro, considers this decision “unacceptable” and considers that it does not serve the interests of his country. Apparently, he is not the only member of the Portuguese government to oppose this decision. Joao Galamba, Secretary of State for the Environment and Energy, is not in favor of a 15% reduction in the country's gas consumption either.

In Greece too, the same story. The decision of the European Union makes people cringe. At least that's what the Greek media  Ekathimerini tells us . Indeed, according to this source, the spokesman for the Greek government, Yiannis Economou, was very clear on this issue.

“The government does not agree in principle with the Commission's proposal for a 15% reduction in the country's consumption of natural gas,” he said, adding that his country has submitted proposals in Brussels hoping that they will bear fruit. For the Greek government, any reduction in gas will have a significant impact on its economy.
